2. Room

There were a number of films that punched me in the gut in 2015, but no film punched me harder than Room. How could it not? It’s about a boy and his mom being locked in a room by a disgusting psychopath. The smartest thing about Room is deciding to tell the story from the five year-old’s perspective. By placing it inside the mind of a child, the story which could have been oppressively bleak is instead filled with discovery. Jacob Tremblay gives the best performance by a child I have seen in years and is a worthy match for his ma, played by the great Brie Larson. Parts had me weeping. Parts had me not breathing. Parts had me smiling. It perfectly achieves everything it wants to, and that is a rare thing.
